Week of definition for several teams in Mexico’s college leagues

This past week was defining for many teams in Mexico’s ONEFA  (Organización Nacional Estudiantil de Futbol Americano) and  CONADEIP (Comisión Nacional Deportiva Estudiantil de Instituciones Privadas, A.C. (private university league) with playoff berths set and a pair of semifinals played.

It started with the ONEFA with the game between the Potros Salvajes UAEM and Toros Salvajes UACh. The Toros could do in the face of the powerful attack of the Potros who never let up during the game and easily won, 45-13.

On the same night, the Tigres beat the Aguilas of the Autonomous University of Chihuahua (UACH) not without first having problems during the first half, where, the scoreboard favored Tigers by 14 points to 7, in a game where both defenses exceeded the opposing offenses.

In the end, the Tigres eliminated the UACH to win by a 31 to 17 score and with this sixth victory secured a berth in one of the semifinals of the Green Group of the Major League.

Águilas Blancas of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) defeated the Linces of the University of the Valley of Mexico (UVM) at home on 20-19, on the ninth and final round of the regular season in the Green Conference.

The Linces had everything to win, when in their last offensive series they were in field goal position, but fumbled and the loose ball was recovered by the Águilas. That was the final nail in the Linces coffin leaving them 3-5 and eliminated from the fight for the postseason. Meanwhile, the Águilas Blancas (4-3) will reach their final game of the season with a win over the Tigres can make the playoffs.

Saturday featured the most attractive duel of the week, “the classic” that has been played since 1936, the Pumas UNAM vs Burros Blancos IPN and this edition did not disappoint. It was a great game where  the Burros Blancos were ahead almost the whole game. The Pumas took their only lead of the day with 40 seconds left, kicking a 32-yard field goal to win the game 24-23 with a crowd of 30,000 in the stands.

The Burros Blancos suffered their third loss of the year by 7 points or less, and are 3-4 in the season but with a victory this weekend and a loss by the Águilas Blancas, will still make the playoffs, quite possibly be back in UNAM University City .

The UAC Lobos got a scare last weekend when the Leones UA Queretaro, who have not won a game this season, were a difficult adversary, and were only beaten 20-13.

The UA Cancun Leones shocked the UT Frailes, when Alberto González Cruz  threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Osmar Bárcena Sánchez with barely 23 seconds on the match clock, giving the Leones a dramatic 16-15 victory over the Frailes of the Universidad del Tepeyac.

Los Frailes bid farewell to the season with a record of one win for six defeats, while the Leones finished with a 4-3 mark and next week they will play the semifinal round in Toluca, where they will visit the Potros Salvajes of the UAEM (5- 2).

In the other semifinal, the Lobos of the U.A. of Coahuila (6-1), will host the Pumas Acatlán of the UNAM (3-4).

In the ONEFA Red conference, it was time for the semifinals and both games were excellent.

The best team of the regular season, the Correcaminos UAT Victoria ended the reign of the Correcaminos UAT Norte, defeating them in the Red Conference playoffs of the ONEFA.

Correcaminos UAT Victoria becomes, for the second consecutive time, a finalist in the ONEFA Red Conference, by eliminating the Reynosa campus 27-13.

UV Halcones the other finalist

The second finalist of the Red Conference is the UV Halcones, after they beat the UAG Tecos 31-28 in a game of many emotions, where the Tecos missed a last second opportunity to force overtime, after missing a field goal of just over 30 yards.

In the CONADEIP, on Friday the games began when the Zorros of CETYS Mexicali played host to the ITSON Potros, in a duel that was one sided with the Mexicali easily winning, 52-14.

In duel of the city of Puebla, the  Aztecas defeated their crosstown rivals, the ITESM Puebla, 42-28.

The Borregos ITESM Monterrey traveled to the west to beat the Borregos Guadalajara who have not won a single game this season, 52-19.

The big surprise of the week in the Libertad group, came from the Coyotes UTH when they beat the Osos of CETYS Tijuana in a tough battle match, 10-6. Tijuana still makes the playoffs in a miraculous way.

In Queretaro, the Borregos of that city were eliminated by the Cimarrones UABC in a shocker, 31-23. The Maroons qualify for playoffs of the Libertad group.

Another game with a tight score was produced by the Borregos ITESM Mexico when they hosted their brothers, the Borregos ITESM Toluca on Saturday night, in a classic of the State in CONADEIP, those of Toluca took it 27-21.
