ELF: Vienna Vikings put unbeaten streak on the line in Frankfurt
The Vienna Vikings will look to keep their undefeated season alive when they travel to Frankfurt for a matchup with the Galaxy as the European League of Football heads into the home stretch of the season.
At 8-0, the Vikings have had a dream start in their first year in the ELF, while the defending champion Galaxy, at only 5-3, are looking to pull off a major upset.
The Vikings’ last game came against the winless Stuttgart Surge in a 41-0 victory on the road. Though a few of their wins have been blowouts, Vienna has proven to have a clutch trait and an ability to win close games, securing one possession victories against the Tirol Raiders and the Barcelona Dragons earlier in the season. While they have been dominant this season, there is no reason to think that they will coast to an undefeated season the rest of the way, as there are several hungry teams that stand in their way.
One of these teams in the Galaxy, a team that has gotten hot at the right time. Just over a month ago the defending league champions were 2-3, but they have since recorded three
straight victories to vault themselves up in the league standings. Their last win came against the Wroclaw Panthers in a 30-29 thriller. Though they have the challenge of taking on the best team in the league this week, Frankfurt can use their momentum and home field advantage for their benefit.
These teams met back on June 12th in Vienna, and the Vikings came away with a 30-10 victory. In that game, Vienna got off to a hot start with a blocked punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter, and never let Frankfurt back into the game. It is important to note that the Galaxy were without starting quarterback Jakeb Sullivan in that contest, which restricted their offense. With Sullivan ready to play on Sunday, this matchup could be much closer.
