The Tyresö Royal Crowns grabbed a 21-0 halftime lead against the Örebro Black Knights and then cruised to a 41-6 win to remain unbeaten in the Swedish Superserien.
Behind an offensive explosion from quarterback Hamish McClure who threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 91 yards and another two scores, the Royal Crowns took control of the game early and never let up. Wide receiver Edvin Almeida Taborda led all receivers with five catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns while Dovydas Koncevicius had five for 68 and another score. Oliver Lundberg had four receptions for 24 and Emil Dahlbom two for 63. McClure led all rushers while Lundberg had seven carries for 55 yards and a touchdown.
For the Black Knights, quarterback Trevor Vasey threw for 163 yards and a touchdown while rushing for another 21 yards. Running back Kasper Wedberg carried the ball 13 times for 43yards. Elliott Hammar was Örebro’s leading receiver gaining 55 yards on three receptions while the otherwise prolific Johannes Lnideus had only three catches for 14 yards and brother Jesper two for 59 and the Black Knights’ lone score.
Tyresö took control of the game early. After forcing a poor punt from the Black Knights on the game’s first possession, the Royal Crowns offense went to work as McClure marched his team from his own 40 down to the Örebro 25 yard line in eight plays and then connected with Almeida for the game’s first touchdown with just over four minutes left in the opening quarter.
The Black Knights managed to reach deep into Tyresö territory on their next drive but stalled on the 29 yard line. McClure wasted no time and three plays later, found a seam up the middle and took off for a 44 yard touchdown to boost the lead to 14-0 early in the second period.
With the Royal Crowns defense neutralizing Vasey and the Örebro offense, two possessions later, McClure took his team from their own 22 down to the Black Knights 20, mixing up his play calling. Then with just over two minutes left in the half, he swung out to his right and simply ran untouched to the end zone to score his second touchdown and increase the lead to 21-0.
At this point, McClure had rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns and thrown for 184 yards and another score.
Tyresö boosted the lead to 28-0 to open the second half with a seven play, 59 yard scoring drive which Lundberg capped with a one yard touchdown.
Örebro finally got on the scoreboard as Vasey connected with Hammar for a 38 yard completion and then found Jesper Lindeus in the end zone from 20 yards out to reduce the lead to 28-6.
McClure wasn’t done yet though as on the very next possession, on a third and 20 from his own 38 yard line, he hit Almeida with a perfectly thrown pass in stride for a 62 yard touchdown to make it 35-6.
With the Black Knights unable to advance out of their own end on the next drive, Tyresö took over on the Örebro 45 and four plays later, McClure found Koncevicius for a 15 yard touchdown, boosting the lead to 41-6 with just over 11 minutes left in the game.
Örebro’s offense moved the ball down to the Royal Crowns’ 22 yard line but an interception gave the ball back to the Royal Crowns. With young Swedish quarterback Eric Alm now replacing McClure, Tyresö settled for just keeping it safe and a second interception by the Royal Crowns secondary snuffed out any chance for another Black Knights’ score.
With the win, Tyresö improved to 2-0 on the season, tied with the Stockholm Mean Machines who defeated the Carlstad Crusaders 9-6 on a late field goal.
Next up for Tyresö are the Mean Machines who they face on May 20. Örebro dropped to 0-2 and will take on the Carlstad Crusaders, who are also 0-2, also on May 20.
