The Jomo Kenyatta University (Jkuat) Sparrows defeated the University of Nairobi Mighty Nyati 6-0 in a tight defense battle to capture the CampOlympics championship final at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
Running backs Mark Omondi Okello and Brian Nakitare were unstoppable on this day as the Sparrows took control of the game early on, relying on their running game. Omondi scored the game’s only touchdown on an eight yard run in the first half.
The Sparrows held on as the Mighy Nyati mounted a furious comeback with quarterback Tony Okello finding holes in the Jkuat defense but unable to find the end zone.
The Sparrows head coach was understandably pleased with his team:
“Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while; you have to do them right all the time. Today is not about the past and it’s not about the future. It’s about right now. And you guys have got to want this feeling to last forever. You tell everyone or anyone that has ever doubted, thought they did not measure up or wanted to quit, you tell them to look up, get up and don’t ever give up.”
Although American football is a young sport in Kenya, it seems to be gaining ground quickly as more and more teams gain access to much needed equipment.
