The first month of college football in Mexico has come to an end, and the season is already filled with surprises and exciting matchups.
The week began in Mexico City, where the local Borregos faced off against their counterparts from Monterrey. Despite Monterrey rotating all their quarterbacks during the game, they had no trouble defeating Borregos CCM, with the final score being 31-7.
This week delivered several high-scoring games. The matchups kicked off on Friday with a clash between Tigres UANL and Pumas UNAM Acatlán, both undefeated teams at the time. The game seemed evenly matched on paper, but three special teams errors resulted in points for Tigres, and Acatlán couldn’t recover. The first half ended 38-21, an almost insurmountable lead. Although Acatlán didn’t give up in the second half, they couldn’t do much, and the game concluded with a score of 52-21. Standout players included the running backs from both teams, Husein Santillan #35 from Pumas Acatlán and Axel Montini #39 from the Tigres, who are emerging as the top running backs in the league.
At the State of Mexico, the Borregos CEM had an easy victory over Potros UAEM with a score of 32-3. Another game that was expected to be close but turned out to be one-sided was when the Burros Blancos IPN defeated the Aztecas UDLA 37-8.
Pumas UNAM had a convincing win with a score of 49-7, with a standout performance from kicker Andrea Martínez #49, the first female player in Mexican college football, who scored 4 extra points.
Once again, the Linces UVM were involved in a high-scoring game when they faced the Aguilas Blancas IPN, who eventually defeated them 37-29 in the closest game of the week.
In the National Conference, the Leones UA Cancún dominated with a score of 50-13 against the Lobos BUAP. Tecos UAG defeated Lobos ULM 47-8, while the Borregos Querétaro claimed the state by defeating Redwolves from Arkansas St. Querétaro 28-6.
