Team USA Thrashes Guatemala To Advance To World University Championship Gold Medal Final
Team USA have advanced to the gold medal final in the World University Championship in Monterrey, Mexico after manhandling the Guatemala 61-0 at Monterrey Tech Stadium.
Quarterback Mac Roche threw for three touchdowns to lead Team USA while teammate Reginald Langford threw another one in the rout. Receivers Lane Knost, Joseph Worth and Trayvon Neal caught one touchdown pass each while London Fitzhugh returned a punt 53 yards for a touchdown and defensive backs Samuel Shick and Nathaniel Robinson each returned an interception for a touchdown.
The scoring didn’t end there as Allen Maxime recovered a fumble returning it for a touchdown, running back James Banks scored on a 33 yard run and Johnathon Rodríguez ran one in from 26 yards out to round out the scoring.
In a game which saw the American coaches liberally rotating players early on, Team USA struck on the first series and never looked back. Joseph Worth hauled in the first touchdown pass as the outmatched Guatemalans could not respond.
Team USA rolled up to a 48-0 halftime lead before easing off in the second half.
Team Guatemala’s two quarterbacks did not complete a pass all game while throwing three interceptions, two of which were returned for major scores.
The United States will now face Team Mexico the defending WUC champion, Saturday June 11.
