Swedish Superserien kicks off 2025 season with 9 teams in the hunt

The 2025 Swedish Superserien season kicks off on April 5 with an expanded nine-team lineup, including two international franchises: Denmark’s Copenhagen Towers and Norway’s Oslo Vikings.

This marks the league’s first expansion since 2024, when the Carlstad Crusaders claimed their Swedish title by dominating the Stockholm Mean Machines 51–22 in the final. The Crusaders, part of the Western Conference, will face stiff competition in a revamped three-conference structure designed to intensify regional rivalries while integrating cross-border matchups.

This year’s conferences divide teams geographically and strategically. The Southern Conference includes newcomers Copenhagen Towers, Kristianstad Predators, and Limhamn Griffins. The Western Conference pairs defending champions Carlstad Crusaders with Oslo Vikings and Örebro Black Knights, while the Eastern Conference features AIK, Stockholm Mean Machines, and the Tyresö Royal Crowns. Teams will play home-and-away games within their conferences (four games per team) and face two inter-conference opponents, totaling six regular-season games.

The top four teams advance to playoffs, with semifinals pitting 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd. The championship final, broadcast live on SWE3 Play, will crown the winner at Karlstad’s Sola Arena on July 12.

Fans can expect heightened drama as the Towers’ debut tests the Crusaders’ reign and the Vikings aim to leverage their Nordic foothold in this evolving gridiron landscape.

Carlstad Crusaders (2024 Record – 7-0 – Swedish Champions)

The Carlstad Crusaders will be looking to capture their second straight Swedish title after an outstanding 2024 season which saw them waltz through the regular season unbreaten allowing just 61 points in the seven games. Their emphatic 51-22 victory over Stockholm in the final was icing on the cake.

Stockholm Mean Machines (2024 record – 6-1 – Runners up)

The Mean Machines had what was for them a disappointing season after winning four of the previous six titles. They only lost to Carlstad, once in the regular season and once in the final. That will no doubt provide fuel for this season as they take aim on capturing the Swedish crown.

Tyresö Royal Crowns (2024 Record – 5-2 – Semifinalists)

Tyresö reached the final four again but were again beaten by Stockholm in the semifinals. This was their straight third year back in the top league (2022, 2023 & 2024) after a six year absence. They played from 2007-2017 and from 1998-2004.

Oslo Vikings (2024 Record – 3-4 – Semifinalists)

The Oslo Vikings were perhaps the biggest surprise of the 2024 Superserien season. After a slow start which saw them lose four straight they went on a roll winning the next four and qualifying for the wild card playoffs where they stunned the lead by knocking off the Black Knights. Their 42-28 loss to the eventual champions the Carlstad Crusaders was pure incentive to reach even farther in 2025. The Vikings had captured the Norwegian title for the sixth time in the previous seven years in 2023.

Örebro Black Knights (2024 record – 3-4 – Quarterfinalists)

The Black Knights suffered through a disappointing 2024 season winning just two games and getting bounced from the quarterfinals by Norway’s Oslo Vikings. They will no doubt rebound in 2025. The team has spent a total of 23 seasons in the top league, third most in history. They won their first and only title in 2021.

Limhamn Griffins (2024 Record – 2-5 – Quarterfinalists)

Limhamn returned to Sweden’s top league in 2024 after a seven year absence. They provided one of the biggest upsets of the year when they defeated the Black Knights 31-23 in Week #3 action. They also beat the Predators and reached the playoffs. They will be looking to improve in 2025. Including 2024, the Griffins have spent a total of 18 years in the Superserien – 2014-2017, 2006-2008, 2002, and 1991-1998. They have won the title three times, 2007, 1994 and 1993.

Kristianstad Predators (2024 Record – 1-6 – Finished 7th)

The Predators returned to Sweden’s top league for the first time since 2015 but managed just one win, a tight 21-20 victor over AIK which kept them out of the cellar. With a revamped roster, they will definitely be looking to improve.

AIK Stockholm (2024 Record – 1-6 – Finished 8th)

AIK’s first season in the Superserien in eight years was a tough one. They were the lowest scoring team in the league averaging just 10.1 points a game. Still they got one win and will hopefully be able to build on that. AIK had spent nine seasons in the Superserien (2008-2016) but as the STU Northside Bulls before they were relegated to Division 1 again and became part of the AIK organization. Their best season was 2012 when they finished fourth with a 6-4 record and were eliminated in the semifinals by the Tyresö Royal Crowns.

Copenhagen Towers (2024 Record – 8-0 in Denmark – Danish Champions)

The newest addition to the Swedish Superserien may be the most intriguing. Like the Oslo Vikings, the Towers were multiple year title holders in their own country, Denmark having won the Danish championship for the fourth straight year last season and 12th overall. In other words, they have been a powerhouse in Danish American football. Will they surprise like the Vikings did in 2024?
