Sweden’s unique Indoor Student Series set to kick off in late November

Since 2011, Swedish universities and colleges have been playing an unusual brand of football.

Indoors, on a regular gym floor.

This is not artificial turf. This is a standard, hard floor.

The seven on seven league, named the Student Series, brings together some of Sweden’s top academic institutes every year in a definitely physical style of football.

Over the years, several teams have fought for the title with the most successful being the reigning champions, Uppsala University, along with the Royal Institute of Technology, Karlberg Military University and Stockholm University. The Uppsala University Snake Heads defeated the defending champion KTH Royals in last year’s thrilling final in front of packed stands.

The Student Series is open to all Swedish universities and colleges. Given the small size of indoor courts, the rules have been altered somewhat. For example, field goals are not used.

The 2024/2025 season will be played between the KTH Royals and Uppsala University Snake Heads, since the Military Academy’s Carlberg Cavaliers announced that they will not be competing this year. A maximum of five games are played between KTH Royals and Snake Heads where the winner will be decided according to the “best of five” principle. The first game of the season kicks off on November 30 in Uppsala Life Arena.
