Sweden: Tyresö Royal Crowns sign UC Davis QB Hunter Rodrigues for rest of season
By Will Rini
The Tyresö Royal Crowns have signed former UC Davis quarterback Hunter Rodrigues to be their primary signal caller for the remainder of the Swedish Superserien season.
The 6′, 190-pound quarterback started for the UC Davis Aggies last season where he threw for 931 yards to go along with eight touchdowns and only four interceptions. Rodrigues’ 146.7 passer rating was good enough to tie his team for third place in the Big Sky conference with an 8-4 record. The young playmaker is also very talented with his legs, tallying 240 rushing yards and four touchdowns last season. He also earned the team’s JERRY NORRIS AWARD as most valuable and inspirational player of the year.
In his best game of the season against San Diego, Rodrigues threw for 322 yards and put up five total touchdowns (four passing and one rushing).
The Royal Crowns have struggled to find consistency at the quarterback position this year with their starter Philip Juhlin being forced to end his season early due to family reasons. The team currently sits last in the league with a 2-8 record but is hopeful that Rodrigues’ speed and strong throwing arm will elevate their performance on the field. If the team can rally around their newest addition and trust his quick decision-making abilities, then they might be able to put more tallies in the win column.
Fortunately, the team does not have a game scheduled for this week and will be able to use an extra week of practice to integrate their newest signing into their offensive system. His first
match will come on June 18th when the Royal Crowns face off against league-best Stockholm Mean Machines in the final of the Scandinavian Cup.
