Sweden: Örebro Black Knights sign Team Sweden QB Viktor Ekberg
The Örebro Black Knights continue to build their team for the 2025 Swedish Superserien season with the announcement that they have signed Swedish national team quarterback Viktor Ekberg.
Ekberg is definitely excited about joining the Black Knights:
“I am looking forward to playing with the Black Knights in 2025, with the investment taking place I believe we can be one of the top teams in the league. The Black Knights are a storied club in American football, and being able to play and have the trust of the entire organization made my decision easier. The Black Knights have a good foundation for the coming year with staff and players, it will be a lot of fun to work together with Coach Mutic and Joel. It will also be a new experience for me moving to a new city and getting to know new people.”
The 6-5, 265 pound, 24 year old native of Arlanda, north of Stockholm, Sweden spent the 2024 Swedish Superserien season with AIK based in Stockholm. In limited action as a backup, he threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns. He had previously played in Sweden’s top league in 2020 when as a backup with the Uppsala 86ers he threw for 331 yards and a pair of scores.
He led the Swedish U20 national team to the 2019 European Championship gold medal game against Austria. Unfortunately, Sweden lost that game but Ekberg was the third leading passer of the tournament and established himself as a national team stalwart.
In 2024, Ekberg played for Team Sweden in their European Championship tournament win against Great Britain but also in the loss to Germany.
Black Knights head coach Branko Mutic:
We have known for years that Viktor was a talented athlete, but this fall with the Swedish National Team, we had a chance first hand to see how he has developed into a great player and a leader. We really like where he is as a quarterback, but the best part is he can get even better. The Black Knights are excited to have him!
Long-time coach and member of the Black Knights Sports Group, Peter Ericson:
“It’s been a long time since the Black Knights invested in a Swedish QB in the Superserien so it’s extra special to have Viktor come to us. There are many advantages to having a Swedish player at the helm and above all a player who has good knowledge and experience in how American football is played in Sweden. This is great news for us. Also, the fact that Victor is a real team player with a tough physical style of play will likely make him a real crowd favorite when the elite team enters the field at Behrn Arena this spring!”
