Sweden’s Superserien expands to eight teams
For the first time since 2018, the Swedish Superserien, the top football league in Sweden, will play with more than four teams in 2022.
The Swedish American Football Federation, SAFF, announced this week an expansion to eight teams.
In addition to the three main clubs, the defending champion Örebro Black Knights, Stockholm Mean Machines, and Carlstad Crusaders, the Swedish league will also feature the Tyresö Royal Crowns, AIK from Stockholm, Göteborg Marvels, Kristianstad Predators and the Limhamn Griffins.
All the five new teams are moving up from Sweden’s Division 1 and all except one, AIK, have played in the Superserien before. The Tyresö Royal Crowns and Limhamn Griffins last appeared in the top league in 2017 when the Royal Crowns ended the year with an 0-10 record and Limhamn 2-8. The last time Kristianstad played in the Superserien was 2015 when they finished with a 4-6 record. AIK, which was only formed in 2020, is entering the Swedish Superserien for the very first time after finishing the 2021 season in Division 1 with a 4-2 record.
This will be the first season since 2012 that the Uppsala 86ers will not be playing in the Superserien.
The Superserien will be divided into two conferences, the North and South. The North will contain AIK, Carlstad, Stockholm and Tyresö while in the South, Örebro will do battle with Göteborg, Kristianstad and Limhamn.
The schedule for the 2022 season has yet to be announced.
