Spain: Osos Rivas edge Coslada Camioneros in defensive battle

Osos Rivas found themselves in an unexpected battle this past weekend but managed to hold off a hard charging Coslada Camioneros squad, defeating them 10-7 as the Spanish National League of American Football wound up its 6th weekend of play.

Defenses dominated the early stages of the game and it wasn’t until the second quarter that the vaunted Osos offense caught fire. Quarterback Norman Douglas hit Edu Pérez with a screen pass and from his own 25 yard line the speedy running back raced 75 yards to the end zone, breaking several tackles along the way to give his team a 7-0 lead.

A fumble by Douglas gave Coslada the ball deep in Osos Rivas territory but a 40 yard field goal attempt was deflected wide. Two possessions later, the Osos struck again. Douglas connected with Pérez again on a screen pass which took the team down to the Coslada 10 yard line. Four plays later, Álvaro Guitián booted a 27 yard field goal to give the home team a 10-0 lead heading into the break.

The third quarter saw a different Coslada offense. Behind the pounding of running back Deyvon Butler, the Camioneros reached the three yard line. Then on a second and goal, Butler punched the ball in breaking three tackles along the way.

With the score 10-7 in favor of Osos Rivas, defenses ruled the last quarter of play. Neither team was able to make much headway until Osos drove down to the Camioneros 15 yard line. A fumble killed the drive however but on the ensuing possession, Coslada’s quarterback tossed an interception.

With the victory, Osos Rivas is one win away from securing a playoff spot. Mathematically, the Camioneros still have a chance but they would have to win both remaining games, one of which is against the unbeaten Las Rozas Black Demons, while Osos Rivas would have to lose both of theirs.
