Spain: Mallorca Voltors stage huge comeback to upset Badalona Dracs
Trailing 22-12 early in the final quarter, the Mallorca Voltors scored 12 unanswered points to defeat the visiting Badalona Dracs 24-22 this past weekend as the Spanish National League of American Football wound up its second round of play.
Mallorca actually took an early 6-0 lead as quarterback Diego Lliteras connected with wide receiver Matías Rojas in the back of the end zone from three yards out. However, the Dracs responded as quarterback Pol Singelton hit Eloi Soler for a 45 yard touchdown to give Badalona a 7-6 lead.
The Voltors answered with running back José Manuel Pascual scoring to give the home team a 12-7 lead late in the second quarter. Badalona grabbed the lead back however before the half ended with Singelton tossing another touchdown pass, this time to wideout Eric Gracia.
Mallorca’s defense held strong in the third period, keeping the visitors out of the end zone but Badalona struck again on the first play of the fourth quarter as Singleton found Gracia again, this time from 39 yards out, and running back Keeshawn Williams added the two-point conversion to give the Dracs a 22-12 lead.
On the very next possession, Lliteras marched his team on a 68 yard drive, capping it with a 27 yard touchdown pass to Gabriel Quigley who caught the ball in double coverage falling into the end zone.
With the Dracs still out in front 22-18, two possessions later, Voltors linebacker Fa’avae Fa’avae scooped up a fumble by Williams and ran it back 75 yards for a touchdown.
With his team trailing by two with little time left on the clock, Singleton mounted a final drive which took the Dracs down to the Voltors five yard line but time ran out and Mallorca defeated Badalona for the first time.
In other action, Osos Rivas defeated the Coslada Camioneros 35-10, the defending champion Las Rozas Black Demons had no trouble beating the Zaragoza Hurricanes 40-6 and the newly promoted Terrassa Reds got by the L’Hospitalet Pioners 19-16.
