Spain: Mallorca Voltors score late to snag win #3

The Mallorca Voltors (3-4) came from behind late in the game to defeat the Barcelona Pagesos (1-5-1) 13-8 this past weekend as the Spanish National League of Football winds down.

The win, the third overall and second in a row for Mallorca, is a measure of revenge for a 10-6 loss to the Pagesos earlier in the season but not enough to earn a playoff berth for the island team.

The Voltors sit third in the LNFA East division behind the conference leading Badalona Dracs and the Terrassa Reds who are second.

After a scoreless first half which saw the Voltors thwart Barcelona’s best scoring chance stopping the Pagesos four times inside the 10 yard line, the action ratcheted up in the second half.

The Voltors struck first when quarterback Diego Lliteras tossed a 30 yard touchdown pass to Matías Rojas to give Mallorca a 7-0 lead midway through the third period. The Pagesos answered in the fourth when quarterback Víctor Andrés Puentes hit Sergio Cebado in the end zone from 12 yards out. The two-point conversion was good and with three minutes left, Barcelona held an 8-7 lead.

However, Lliteras responded marching his team from his own 45 down to the Barcelona 12 yard line. Then he connected with José Manuel Pascual on a slant and the wideout took it into the end zone to give the Voltors a 13-7 lead with little time left.

A last ditch effort by the visitors failed as Mallorca defensive back Unai Alberdi picked off Puentes on the final play of the game to seal the win.
