Spain: Mallorca Voltors make huge statement
The Mallorca Voltors (2-0) made it emphatically clear from the opening whistle that they are aiming higher this season as they put the boots to the visiting Murcia Cobras (1-2) Sunday, whipping them 41-16.
Mallorca, in only their third season in Spain’s top league, took a 34-8 halftime lead and cruised for the win. The Voltors have been eliminated in the quarterfinals in each of the last two years.
Voltors quarterback Ty Henry ran for two touchdowns while Jeremy Cornelius, Robert Brice, Markus Hachenberg and Victor Rodriguez added one each.
For the Cobras, Antoni Montón and Rubén Fernández scored.
With the win, Mallorca moves into first place in the Spanish League of American Football South Division having scored 85 points and allowed just 22 points in their two games.
The Cobras, semifinalists in 2019 and Spanish finalists in 2018, fall to 1-2 and will have to battle over the next seven games to be assured of a playoff berth.
Next up for the Voltors on Sunday, February 9 are the Las Rozas Black Demons, also unbeaten in two games. Murcia will take on the Fuengirola Potros on February 8.
