Spain: Las Rozas Black Demons edge Mallorca Voltors in overtime
The Las Rozas Black Demons needed an overtime field goal to finally defeat a scrappy Mallorca Voltors team 39-38 in Mallorca, Spain this past weekend.
The Black Demons had squandered a 35-21 third-quarter lead and trailed 38-35 in the final minute of play. But a game-tying field goal by Álvaro Peñas sent the game into overtime and then Evan Altizer hauled in a five-yard pass from Trenton Jones for the win. The Spanish Federation of American Football, FEFA, only awards a single point for overtime scores regardless of whether it is a touchdown or field goal, hence the single point victory.
Jones was superb on the day throwing for 425 yards and five touchdowns with Altizer catching two of them and Sergio Condés, Jorge García and Javier Carrasco catching one each.
For the Voltors, quarterback Ty Henry completed 16 of 30 passes for 404 yards and four touchdowns while running one in himself. Lubos Paprcka caught two of those touchdown passes while Jeremy Cornelius and Ludwig Siemssen caught one apiece.
The Black Demons took control of the game early, grabbing a 21-14 halftime lead which they extended to 35-21 midway through the third quarter. But Mallorca staged a remarkable comeback scoring two unanswered touchdowns while Ludwig Siemssen added a late field goal to surge into the lead 38-35. However, Peñas kicked a late field goal to tie the game and take it to overtime. Altizer broke the tie on the first overtime possession and then the Las Rosas secondary did the rest, picking off Henry’s final pass for the win.
In other action from Spain, Madrid’s Osos Rivas downed the Gijon Mariners 46-20 while the Badalona Dracs pummelled the Zaragoza Hurricanes 52-14 and the Murcia Cobras got by the Fuengirola Potros 20-14.
