Spain defends IFAF Women’s European Championships title in 2025/26 against Great Britain, Finland and Germany

Reigning IFAF European champion Spain will defend its women’s tackle football title against Great Britain, Finland and Germany when the 2025/26 tournament kicks off this spring.

Europe’s top four nations will again compete in a round robin format, but this time the first and second placed teams in the standings will qualify for the gold medal game in August 2026, with the third and fourth placed teams contesting the bronze medal.

The first action comes in Vantaa, Finland, where the host and last year’s third place finisher welcomes Germany on Sunday, May 25. Silver medalist Great Britain takes on Finland on the weekend of August 23/24 then a week later Spain begins its anticipated championship defense away to Germany.

Spain has a home game against Great Britain on October 18 to close out the 2025 action. The remaining two group games on the weekend of May 30/31, 2026, will determine the gold and bronze medal lineups when Great Britain hosts Germany and Finland travels to Spain.

“We anticipate a very competitive series of games and truly appreciate the effort that all four nations put in to ensure the ongoing interest in this competition,” said IFAF Sport Manager Lars Carlsen. “Everyone was very eager to compete on the tackle football field again and we had positive discussions when addressing the obstacles teams face, such as travel costs, logistics and player availability. It is a credit to these federations that they were such a pleasure to work with.”

Spain became the IFAF Women’s European champions for the first time in 2023/24 when a thrilling 21-16 victory over 2022 IFAF World Championships silver medalists Great Britain earned them a third straight victory. Considered underdogs as newcomers to the tournament, Spain beat Germany and defending two-time (2015, 2019) champions Finland, leaving head coach Manuel Ibañez’s charges as the continent’s only unbeaten team at 3-0.

Great Britain beat Finland 21-14 to claim the silver medal over the Finns on a head-to-head tiebreaker, while Germany finished fourth overall.

* For the Championship game and the third-place game, the hosting rights will be awarded to the team that played the fewest number of homes games in the round robin stage. If the two teams played the same number of home games in the round robin, then the home field rights will be given to the highest ranked team after the round robin.
