Team Serbia scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and then held on against Switzerland to beat them 17-0 and take a step closer to playing in the top division of national team football in Europe.
In front of an enthusiastic crowd in Lignano Italy, Serbia downed the Swiss by the same score as the last time they met in 2014.
As was fitting for a team that relied on its defense, defensive lineman Miloš Lišanin was named game MVP.
David Hanomihl-Lukić threw a 31 yard touchdown pass to Philip Nedeljkovića on a fourth and long play and Goran Zec added another touchdown on a 21 yard scamper. Darko Klasan kicked a 20 yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring.
Switzerland could not manage to mount much offense against a very fast and aggressive Serbian defense.
Serbia will face play Italy on Sunday to decide who advances to play either Sweden or Denmark in 2017 for the right to play in the 2018 IFAF European Championships. Italy downed Israel 40-10 earlier in the day.
