Team Serbia is set to play Switzerland Friday in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy in the second of two IFAF Europe qualifying games to be held in Italy this weekend. In the other game Friday, Italy and Israel square off.
The winners of these two games will play each other Sunday and move on to face either Sweden or Denmark in 2017 to earn a berth in the European Championship tournament in 2018 in Germany.
Team Serbia downed Hungary 56-0 last October to qualify to play in this tournament. A month prior to that game, Serbia had downed Italy in an international exhibition 34-31.
Switzerland’s route to this tournament was through Slovakia as the Swiss defeated the Slovakians 21-0 in Basel, Switzerland last October. Earlier this year, Switzerland defeated Italy 12-9 in the Alps Bowl.
This will be the fourth game between these two countries since 2007. Serbia has 2-1 edge after defeating Switzerland 17-0 two years ago in Winterthur, Switzerland.
