Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns defeat Frankfurt Universe to stay unbeaten atop German Football League
The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns have taken the overall lead in the German Football League after getting a solid 24-7 victory over the Frankfurt Universe in Frankfurt this past weekend.
The 8-0 Unicorns played mistake-free football in handing Frankfurt (5-1) their first loss of the regular season, and moving into first place overall in the GFL.
Quarterback Marco Ehrenfried completed 19 of 29 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns while Tyler Rutenbeck threw a touchdown pass to Ari Adegbesan on a option play to account for Schwäbisch Hall’s third touchdown. Nathaniel Robitaille caught eight passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns to lead all receivers. Tim Stadelmayr kicked a 41 yard field goal to round out the scoring for the Unicorns.
Universe quarterback Sonny Weishaupt completed 12 of 18 passes but only gained 92 yards with the Unicorns secondary playing so well. Jeremy Dixon also stepped in at quarterback for Frankfurt finishing with 54 yards on six of seven passing. Running back Silas Nacita was held to 45 yards rushing but scored a first quarter touchdown for the Universe.
The Unicorns jumped out to a 14-0 lead on the touchdown receptions by Robitaille. But the always dangerous Silas Nacita responded with a 12 yard touchdown run in the second quarter to narrow the lead to 14-7.
Stadelmayr kicked a field goal and the half ended 17-7 in favor of the Unicorns.
Schwäbisch Hall defensive back Jan Klenk picked off Weishaupt on the first play of the fourth quarter following a scoreless third, and Ehrenfried made Frankfurt pay, engineering a 57 yard drive finishing it off with an eight yard touchdown pass to Adegbesan.
The Unicorns defense did the rest and Schwäbisch Hall came away with their eighth, and perhaps biggest, win of the year.
