Romania: Timișoara 89ers host the Mures Monsters in a high-stakes showdown

By Henry Páll Wulff

All eyes turn to Timișoara this weekend as the 89ers (1-1) host the Mures Monsters (1-1) at Stadion Textila in a highly anticipated Romanian Football League (CNFA) clash between two title contenders.

It’s been more than three years since these teams last met, and both are desperate to assert dominance in what could become the CNFA’s most heated rivalry this season.

The 89ers enter Week 3 riding the high of a nail-biting comeback win over the Cluj Crusaders in Week 2. With an extra week to prepare, Head Coach Jarrid Bryant has had time to study the Monsters’ game film and make adjustments. After narrowly escaping Cluj, Bryant and his squad know there’s little room for error against a Mures team that, despite a crushing loss to the Rebels, is still brimming with potential.

Veteran player and club president Andrei Grijak says the team’s drive comes from within:

“The ambition of the young guys to prove themselves and the strong grip of our coaches on the group—that’s what started everything,” Grijak told AFI. “The opportunity to be coached by someone who played at the highest level of this sport makes everyone work harder.”

That renewed energy has also fueled a grittier, more determined locker room culture.

“Having a chip on our shoulder and wanting to prove that this team ain’t dead and that we aren’t done yet makes everyone want more,” Grijak continued. “And when you put one guy wanting more next to another one that aims the same, the outcome is immense.”

Rather than dwelling on past versions of the team, the 89ers have adopted a mindset of relentless self-improvement:

“We don’t compare ourselves to the past. We only compare us with how we were a day before. That is our main focus. Improving and always improving—the grind never stops.”

For the Monsters, it’s a chance at redemption. Coming off a demoralizing 48-0 defeat at the hands of the defending champions, the team from Târgu Mureș finds itself at a crossroads. The departure of former Head Coach Shayan Hassanzadeh to the ELF’s Helvetic Mercenaries left big shoes to fill, but newly appointed HC Nick Davis is determined to prove his team isn’t backing down.

“We’re building a culture around a shared love of the game,” Davis told AFI. “This trust between coaches and players is key—and it’s what’s going to help us bounce back.”

The stakes couldn’t be higher. If the 89ers falter at home, they’ll have to regroup fast for a tough road game in Mureș next week. But if the Monsters drop a second straight game, their playoff hopes may already begin to dim.
