Two people were reportedly shot during Friday’s parade in Philadelphia to celebrate the Eagles’ Super Bowl 59 victory.
The shooting occurred along the Ben Franklin Parkway, according to CBS Philadelphia. Few details are available on the events leading up to the shooting or if the shooter(s) have been found and detained. No one in the crowd reportedly heard the shots. The shooting victims, both female, were reportedly shot in their legs and went to a medic tent at 23rd and Spring Garden Streets.
Police are searching for a male suspect in a gray Eagles jersey with green numbers on the back, according to The Citizen app.
Both of the women are in stable condition at Penn Presbyterian Hospital. The shooting appears to have stemmed from an argument, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.
A 27-year-old woman and her boyfriend attempted to cut through a porta-potty line and someone in the crowd punched the man, setting off a skirmish. A gun was fired and the woman was shot in her calf while another 20-year-old bystander was struck in her thigh, according to Philadelphia Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore.
The incident occurred while Eagles players and executives were giving speeches at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where the parade route ended but “outside the footprint of the event,” according to Fox 29’s Steve Keeley.
City officials said before Friday that 1 million people were expected in the city to attend the parade.
Friday’s Super Bowl championship parade was the second consecutive celebration that was marred by tragedy. Last year, one person was killed and 23 were injured in a shooting during the Kansas City Chiefs’ parade. That violence was attributed to a dispute among several people that resulted in gunfire.
