Poland’s 2016 SuperFinal Features Top Two Teams In Country
Poland’s top two teams over the past three years will clash again in the championship final, the SuperFinal, Saturday as the Wroclaw Panthers take on the defending champion Gdynia Seahawks at Stadion Miejski in Białystok, Poland.
Gdynia has prevailed in the past two years over the Panthers in the title game but Wroclaw’s late season 27-12 victory over the Seahawks may give them a slight edge. Gdynia had won the previous meeting in 2016 13-10.
Both teams enter the game with 8-1 records with each loss coming at the hands of the other team.
Wroclaw led the league in almost every statistical category and averaged more than 43 points a game while giving up a mere eight during the season.
Panthers quarterback EJ White has thrown for 11 touchdowns and over 800 yards in the five games he has played while running back Ricky Stevens has gained 1,027 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Gdynia quarterback Terrance Owens had had an outstanding season completing 109 of 181 passes for 1,213 yards and 17 touchdowns. Josh Quezada at running back has picked up 875 yards rushing while scoring nine touchdowns.
Stevens and Quezada were one and two in rushing in Poland while White and Stevens were second and third in passing yardage per game and passing efficiency.
Although on paper the Panthers look like odds-on favorites, Gdynia was number one in creating turnovers with a ratio of 1:12 per game. That could be a key to this game.
Nick Johansen, head coach of the Wroclaw Panthers:
“This is a great matchup in a game that will no doubt come down to the fourth quarter and the last play.”
