Poland: Białystok Lowlanders sign mobile quarterback Cameron Yowell
The Polish Football League’s defending champions, Lowlanders Białystok, have announced the signing of quarterback Cameron Yowell.
Following back-to-back Polish Bowl wins, Białystok have made the decision to pick up a new leader in 24-year-old mobile passer Cam Yowell.
The Phoenix, Arizona native is still a new face to the European football scene, having completed just one regular season game professionally.
Yowell signed for the Tychy Falcons, another Polish side, in December 2022, only to have his season cut short due to injury.
Prior to his move to Europe, Yowell played varsity football for Occidental College and Phoenix College in 2017 and ‘18 respectively.
Yowell was a team captain in Phoenix, starting seven games at quarterback for the NJCAA side. The 2018 season saw him complete 165 passes (Tied-first in district) for 1530 yards and 14 total touchdowns. As well as being voted Offensive MVP for his team, he received 1st Team NJCAA All-Academic honors.
In 2019, Yowell walked on at Auburn to play quarterback, however the pandemic stripped him of any playing opportunities and, eventually, a roster spot. After graduating in 2021, he decided not to re-enter the transfer portal and took his talents to Europe a year later.
In his short spell with the Falcons, the 6’2”, 190 pound mobile passer played four games total, showing glimpses of his potential every time he touched the field.
Yowell’s first two games came in the preseason against the Ostrava Steelers and Warsaw Eagles respectively, where he completed an impressive 77.5% of passes, going for 430 yards and three touchdowns over the two games.
His full regular season game would also be his last of the 2023 season; Yowell put on an impressive showing in his debut, beating out the Silesia Rebels by a score of 36-28 while racking up 257 total yards and four scores with 78.6% accuracy on his passes. The Rebels would go on to make it all the way to the Polish Bowl before falling to the Lowlanders, showing the young quarterback’s ability to compete at the top level of Polish football.
After sitting out of the team’s second game, where they fell 38-0 to his new team, the Lowlanders, Yowell attempted to take to the field for game three, unfortunately sustaining a season-ending knee injury.
The newly-signed Lowlander has been rehabilitating his injury since and is expecting to make a full return to football early in the new year.
Despite a roller-coaster of a career in his early years, Yowell is ready to make an impact on the league upon his return:
“My goal for the upcoming season is simple. Win. I know that if I play to my standard, I can take this team to another championship. I understand this is an incredibly talented league that only got better this past year, but there is no opponent I fear. My goal is to win the championship!”
Piotr Morko, president of Lowlanders Białystok, spoke on the new signing:
“We are convinced that we made the right choice in selecting Cameron. We are aware of the skills he possesses and the challenges he has encountered throughout most of his career. Often, the difficulties a player experiences provide more valuable lessons than the successes themselves. I admire his determination, resilience, and work ethic, all of which he has consistently demonstrated since the beginning of his rehabilitation. It’s evident that he will return to the football pitch stronger, both physically and mentally.”
