The Mexican ONEFA All Star team staged an exciting second half comeback and defeated the All American Eagles 27-19 in Aztec Bowl XLIII Saturday at Gaspar Mass Stadium in Monterrey, Mexico.
Mexican national team quarterback Alejandro Garcia (16) scored two rushing touchdowns to lead the Mexican national team to back-to-back victories for only the second time in the history of the Aztec Bowl.
Despite trailing 13-0 and 19-7, the national team bounced back in the third quarter with Garcia behind center and the defense adjusting to the American offense. Defensive back Alcides Benítez picked off American quarterback Reid Miller and Jerónimo Arzate blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to help Mexico overtake the Eagles.
When Ricardo Aguilar (29) kicked a 44-yard field goal with little more than four minutes left to extend the score to 29-17, the Americans had a chance to tie the game but Miller was sacked on a fourth down from Mexico’s 18 yard line by Máximo González to seal the win.
Alejandro Garcia was named the Most Valuable Player for Mexico while Reid Miller got the nod for the All American Eagles.
With the win, the Mexican ONEFA All Star Team now has 16 victories, 26 losses and a tie in the history of the Aztec Bowl that has been played since 1947.
