The Galgos de Tijuana of Mexico’s Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional, LFA, have signed former Reyes de Jalisco cornerback David Richardson for the 2023 season.
The 5’11″, 185-pound native of Rockwell, Texas is entering his first year in Mexico, with the goal of turning around the Galgos organization’s fortunes. Tijuana finished their inaugural season as a franchise last year with a 0-6 record, being the only team to miss the playoffs and the first ever team in league history to be winless.
Last season with the Reyes, the now-24 year old started every game for the expansion franchise, recording 24 tackles, three interceptions and eight pass breakups earning him an All-Star selection and his team a trip to the playoffs, where the Reyes lost to the Raptors de Naucalpan 26-6 in the wild card round.
After the LFA season ended, Richardson played the final four games for the Rojos CDMX (now the Reds) of the Fútbol Americano de México before they folded. He finished with 15 tackles, four pass breakups and an interception.
Before he began his professional career, Richardson played for Tulsa University (Div. I), before transferring to Fullerton Junior College from 2016-2017 and then West Florida University (Div. II) from 2018-2019. As an amateur, he had 75 tackles, six interceptions including two pick sixes, 25 pass deflections and a force fumble. He was also a two-time Junior College National Champion, an NCAA Div. II National Champion and was even a part of the 2020 Podyum All-Star Bowl.
Following a year off from the COVID-19 pandemic, Richardson began his professional career in 2021 after signing a contract with the Budapest Wolves. He had an immediate impact for them as in five games, he had 20 tackles, two interceptions and eight pass break ups earning him an all-star nod after he helped the Wolves win the Hungarian title.
