The Fundidores de Monterrey of Mexico’s Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional have re-signed quarterback Shelton Eppler for the 2023 season.
The 6’1″, 205 pound native of Navasota, Texas is returning for his second season in Mexico with the goal of bringing another championship to Monterrey. Last season, the Fundidores won the Tazón México V, beating the Gallos Negros de Querétaro for their first championship in franchise history. Now they are trying to be the first LFA team to win back-to-back titles since the Mayas CDMX did it in 2016 and 2017.
The 25-year-old quarterback had an outstanding season in 2022. He led the league in passing yards with 1,677 and passing touchdowns with 15 en route to being named the league’s Most Valuable Player. This was the first time the award had been won by a non-Mexican player.
Before arriving in Mexico, he began his professional career in 2021 in Demark playing for the Aalborg 89ers, guiding them to the Danish semifinals in his first season in international football after throwing for 1,723 yards and 17 touchdowns during the regular season.
Eppler played his college football at Northwestern State (NCAA Div. 1) after transferring from Trinity Valley Community College. In his junior and senior seasons at Northwestern State, he threw for 6,226 yards and 54 touchdowns while breaking numerous single-game and single season records. In his freshman and sophomore years with Trinity Valley Community College, in 14 games he threw for 2,656 yards and 28 touchdowns, winning the Heart of Texas Bowl in his second year.
