Mexico: College – ONEFA – UNAM Pumas CU win battle of the cats on 90th anniversary
The powerful UNAM Pumas CU, celebrating their 90th college season in Mexico, decisively beat the Pumas Acatlán 49-13 in a non-conference ONEFA (Organización Nacional Estudiantil de Futbol Americano) game to even their season record at 1-1.
The Pumas CU roared out to a 32-0 third quarter lead before easing off and cruising to the win.
Running back Oscar Villagrán scored two touchdowns, one rushing and one in the air while Victor Hernandez and Herminio Rojas added one each. Quarterback Jose Arenas threw touchdown passes to Villagrán as well as Andrés Salgado. Backup quarterback Sergio Martinez threw a 59 yard touchdown pass to Aaron Pacheco. Diego Reyes kicked two field goals and five extra points.
Pumas Acatlán’s quarterback Yair Márquez threw for one touchdown and rushed for the other. Receiver Victor Fosado caught the lone touchdown pass from six yards out.
Hernandez opened the scoring finding the end zone from 17 yards out and Reyes kicked the PAT fora 7-0 lead. Villagrán added to it and then the CU Pumas forced a safety increasing the lead to 16-0. Reyes kicked a field goal and the lead was 19-0 at the break.
The offensive onslaught continued in the third with Salgado catching a six yard touchdown pass. Rojans then broke for a 46 yard run and the lead by late in the third quarter was 32-0.
Márquez finally connected with Fosado to get Acatlán on the scoreboard but Villagrán found the end zone again on the next series for UNAM extending the lead to 39-7. Pacheco caught a 59 yard touchdown pass from Martinez in the fourth and UNAM held a commanding 46-7 lead.
Márquez marched his team down the field on the next possession for Acatlán capping the drive with a one yard plunge himself. With the score 46-13, Reyes would close out the scoring with a 55 yard field goal.
Next up for UNAM head coach Otto Bederril is arch rivals Auténticos Tigres de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León this coming weekend.
