The Mexicas remain unbeaten in Mexico’s Liga de Football Americano Profesional (LFA) Sunday as they pummeled the Fundidores 44-15 at “Palillo Martinez”stadium in Mexico City.
Quarterback Ricardo Quintana now leads the highest scoring offense in the league and on Sunday completed 23 of 37 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for another three touchdowns. Cerrado Ramos ran for one touchdown and threw a touchdown pass himself on an option play. Defensive back Jovanni Carrillo added a pick six.
This was a tale of two halves. The teams played defensive football for the opening two quarters and were deadlocked at 7-7 at the break as Quintana threw a touchdown pass while Fundidores quarterback Roberto Vega countered with a scoring pass to Padilla.
Then the Mexicas exploded for 37 straight points in the second half as for the second straight week, Mexicas head coach Rafael Duk proved himself to be the master of halftime adjustments.
Quintana turned to the option play and ran it to perfection in the third quarter scoring three times and by the end of the period the Mexicas had taken a 26-7 lead.
A halfback option play left Ramos rolling left in the backfield and he threw a beautiful pass to Diego Castro to increase the lead to 32-7 with just over 10 minutes to play.
Carrillo then picked off a Vega pass and returned it for a touchdown giving the Mexicas a 38-7 lead. Ramos then added another rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter and the Mexicas held a 44-7 lead. The Fundidores finally recovered enough on their final possession to score a touchdown but that was as close as it would get, 44-15.
With the victory, the Mexicas have opened the season 2-0 for the second straight year and now top the Central division standings.
