Mexican college football season kicked off with a bang

The ONEFA Liga Mayor college football season in Mexico kicked off this past weekend with intensity and a few surprising scores.

Friday Night Football

Under the Friday night lights, the action began in Guadalajara with one of the biggest upsets of the week. The Borregos Salvajes of ITESM Guadalajara hosted their counterparts from ITESM Campus Mexico City, defeating them 35-17 and showing that they will be much more competitive this season than in the past two years.

A couple of hours later, two simultaneous games sparked more action. In Monterrey, the Tigres UANL took on the Aztecas of UDLA. Despite a valiant effort from the Aztecas, the Tigres managed to impose their pace and dominated with a 28-10 win.

In Mexico City, the Pumas UNAM put on a show for their fans, defeating the Leones of Universidad Anáhuac México Norte (UAMN). However, it wasn’t an easy victory. The first half ended with a tight 10-3 score in favor of the Pumas, but in the second half, they extended their lead and sealed a solid 31-17 win.

Saturday: A Day of Classics and Excitement

Saturday brought more games filled with drama and great football. One of the most anticipated matchups was the classic UNAM vs. IPN clash, as the Pumas Acatlán hosted the Águilas Blancas. The game featured a thrilling back-and-forth battle, with the Pumas Acatlán leading 18-17 by the end of the third quarter. However, the Águilas Blancas kicked into high gear in the fourth quarter, taking the win, 27-18.

In another exciting matchup, the UVM Linces hosted the always challenging Burros Blancos of IPN. In a close contest, the Linces claimed their first victory since 2015, defeating the Burros Blancos 17-7.

Meanwhile, the newly promoted Águilas UACH couldn’t stand up to the reigning champions, Borregos Monterrey, and were overwhelmed with a resounding 53-17 loss.

One of the most anticipated games of the week was in Puebla, where the Borregos Puebla faced off against their counterparts, Borregos CEM. In a battle that was decided in the fourth quarter, Borregos Puebla proved why they are strong title contenders, defeating Borregos CEM 23-7 with a powerful display.
