Team USA takes on the defending champion Team Mexico in the gold medal final of the 2016 World University Championship in Monterrey, Mexico.
Team Mexico enters this game not only as defending champion but with an anticipated huge crowd in Monterrey Tech stadium giving Mexico an enormous home advantage. In fact, the United States may well come into this contest as slight underdogs. The Mexicans have only allowed a total of three points against them after overwhelming China and Guatemala and then dismantling Team Japan earlier in the tournament 36-3.
After trouncing both China and Guatemala, the United States struggled against the same Japanese squad edging them 22-14, but they were trailing 14-13 with seconds remaining and needed to kick a field goal in the final 10 seconds to secure the victory. They scored on their own kickoff when Japan turned the ball over on the kickoff return to account for the extra six points.
