LIVESTREAM Switzerland: Calanda Broncos @ Bern Grizzlies, May 1, 14:30 CET (2:30 pm, 08:30 am ET)

In the most anticipated matchup of the season in Switzerland’s National League, the defending champion and unbeaten Calanda Broncos (4-0) travel to Bern to take on the Bern Grizzlies who are also undefeated (4-0).

The Grizzlies have been dominant in the four wins beating the Winterthur Warriors 34-6, the Geneva Seahawks 27-0, Basel Gladiators 31-3 and Thun Tigers 24-7. Meanwhile, Calanda has looked just as impressive in defeating the Tigers 49-21, the Gladiators 34-15, Winterthur Warriors 34-6 and Geneva 21-0.

The last time these two teams met was the 2021 Swiss Bowl with Calanda coming away with a 21-12 victory.

The Grizzlies are quarterbacked by veteran Clark Evans who led the Thonon Black Panthers to the 2019 French title but who was behind center for the Broncos in 2017 and 2018 leading them to the Swiss title both years. One of his weapons on offense is running back Ibo Mbunga. The defense is formidable.  Led by middle linebacker Andreas Buri and defensive lineman Dom Liecht with former Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Jamalcolm Liggins anchoring the secondary, the unit has allowed just 16 points in four games.

For Calanda, quarterback Chase Andries is the key and in the backfield he has running backs Brecht DeBoosere who scored a touchdown last week against Geneva and three the week before against Winterthur, along with Erik Rageth. Melvin Sassi has scored touchdowns in the last two wins and with his speed is always dangerous. The Broncos defense has surrendered an average of only 10.5 points a game.

The next time these two face each other will likely be the 2022 Swiss Bowl.
