In their first game since 2017, Team Spain will play host to Team Russia at Ciudad del Fútbol de Las Rozas stadium in Madrid, Spain Saturday,August 4 in the first ever game between the two countries in the International Madrid Open.
The Spanish squad last saw action a year ago, when they lost a controversial game to Team Belgium, 18-16. They had dropped a tough 14-6 decision to the Belgians the year before. Spain lost to Israel in a European qualification game in 2015, 28-20.
Team Russia last took the field in 2017 when they defeated the Belgian Barbarians, the Belgian national team, 7-2 in Brussels. Prior to that, in 2016 the Russian squad had lost in the IFAF Europe qualifying tournament to both Great Britain (30-13) and Holland (17-6). Russia had previously defeated Norway 20-0 to advance to the qualifying tournament.
The Russians have traveled to Madrid with a 44 man squad which does not include long-time national team quarterback Igor Chernolutsky who has been the key to their offense.
