LIVESTREAM Spain Semifinal: Zaragoza Hurricanes @ Las Rozas Black Demons, April 15, 15:00 CET (3 pm, 9 am EDT)
The unbeaten Las Rozas Black Demons (8-0) who finished first in the Spanish National League of American Football, LNFA, West division will host the Zaragoza Hurricanes (4-4), second place finishers in the East, in the semifinals, Saturday, April 15 at Campo de Rugby El Cantizal in Madrid.
The Black Demons, runners up in 2022, wound up the 2023 regular season with a 42-9 win over Gijon Mariners after beating the Alcobendas Cavaliers 35-23. Las Rozas opened the season by beating the Coslada Camioneros 14-7 and followed that up with a historic victory as they defeated the defending champions, Osos Rivas, 3-2, in the lowest scoring game in the top division ever. They then walloped Alcobendas 48-0 and Gijon 56-14 before edging Osos 7-0 in another low scoring affair. Finally, Las Rozas flexed their muscles against Coslada in their second meeting, blanking them 44-0.
Canadian quarterback Theo Landers has been playing excellent football for Las Rozas and with running backs Daniel Romero and veteran Marcos de la Mata providing a potent ground game, the Black Demons are a formidable opponent for the upstart Hurricanes who are making their first ever appearance in the post season.
Zaragoza won four of their last five games of the season including a crucial 29-7 victory over the Mallorca Voltors and then a 21-16 win over the L’Hospitalet Pioners to wind up the year. They had opened the season with three straight losses before picking up back-to-back wins (against L’Hospitalet Pioners and Valencia Firebats). However, they lost a tough one to Badalona 27-21 before the victory over Mallorca.
In other words, Zaragoza is on a roll and cannot be taken lightly.
Zaragoza’s Mexican quarterback Ricardo Rincon threw four touchdown passes in the Hurricanes crucial win over Mallorca. He will have plenty of weapons to connect with, starting with wide receivers Aaron David, Antonio Dantart and Luis Sanchez. Defensive lineman Prince Bafhoh gives the Hurricanes a presence along its defensive line.
