The undefeated Badalona Dracs, defending Spanish champions, play host to the Mallorca Voltors in Barcelona Sunday, March 11 in the fourth week of action in the Spanish American Football League.
The Dracs lost only one game in 2017 en route to their eighth Spanish title and second in a row. They have opened the 2018 season in similar fashion with the top offense (44.3 points/game) and by far the best defense which has allowed a measly four points per game.
Badalona quarterback Sergi Gonzalo is playing as well as he did in 2017 when he led the league in passing touchdowns. One of his key receivers is Brandon Ravenel and running back Edu Morians is also playing well.
The two teams faced each other in the opening game of the season for the Dracs and Badalona won easily 51-0. But the Voltors have improved since then with two straight wins. They knocked off the L’Hospitalet Pioners 39-13 and then avenged an earlier loss to the Valencia Firebats by beating them 27-20. In fact, in that game, Mallorca stunned the visiting Firebats by taking a 19-0 lead into the fourth quarter. Valencia mounted a furious comeback overtaking the Voltors 20-19 midway through the final period. However, Mallorca quarterback Barry Craig Coffman, who had already thrown for two touchdowns and scored another on his own, caught an option pass from Henri Laine to seal the win.
Although on paper, Badalona may look like easy winners, the way the Voltors have played in the last month could change this
