Madrid’s Osos Rivas will take the 4 1/2 hour bus ride to Gijon on the north coast of Spain Saturday Feb. 17 to face the Gijon Mariners in a Group C matchup at Las Mestas Sports Complex.
The Mariners and Osos are both 2-1 as both have lost to the division leading Las Rozas Black Demons. Gijon lost 39-14 while Osos Rivas were edged 37-35.
Osos Rivas boasts the second best offense in the group and the fourth best in Spain averaging 35.6 points per game.
Mariners starting quarterback Marcos Martínez has thrown 10 touchdown passes in three games so far this year with his leading receiver, Hilario Lantaron catching seven of them. Osos Rivas starting quarterback is Gabriel Losada and his favorite receiver is Clinton Greenaway who won the Brazilian title with Sada Cruzeiro.
These two teams faced each other twice in 2017 in the Spanish first division with each earning a road victory. Osos Rivas beat the Mariners at Las Mestas 19-0 while Gijon returned the favor in Madrid by a score of 34-21. The two head coaches, Daniel Castañon (Gijon) and Jesus Sanchez know each other well. This will be an outstanding game.
