The Gijon Mariners (1-4) face a tough challenge when they host the unbeaten and defending champion Las Rozas Black Demons (6-0), Saturday, March 15 as the Spanish National League of American Football, LNFA, heads into the home stretch of the season.
The last time these two teams met, Las Rozas came away with a 49-27 win.
The Black Demons top the West conference of the LNFA while with three games to go in the regular season, Gijon sit in fourth without a chance of making the playoffs.
Gijon lost 48-10 to the Coslada Camioneros a week ago which followed a 38-0 loss to Osos Rivas the week before. They had earned their first victory of the season the week before after beating the Zaragoza Hurricanes 13-7. They had dropped their two first games of the season, 33-17 to the Camioneros in their opening game and then 49-27 to the Black Demons.
The Black Demons have opened the season impressively reeling off six straight wins, four of them lopsided. After getting by Osos Rivas 21-14 in the first game of the year, Los Rozas whipped the Hurricanes 49-6 and then beat the Mariners 49-27. They pounded the Camioneros 40-3 before getting a 17-7 victory over Osos Rivas and 35-6 over Zaragoza.
The Black Demons have by far the best offense in the league with quarterback Theo Landers having tossed 13 touchdown passes while scoring another seven on his own. Meanwhile, the Mariners have mustered a meager 13.4 points a game on offense while surrendering 35 per contest.
