The Fuengirola Potros (1-5) will host the Gijon Mariners (0-6) in one of three games Sunday, March 28, as the Spanish League of American Football winds up its seventh round. This is a rematch of a January 30th defensive battle between these two smash mouth football teams that ended in a 10-0 victory for the Potros.
Feungirola heads into this game after losing to the Osos Rivas 52-0 at home. The game took a bad turn on the opening play from scrimmage for the Potros when starting quarterback, Henri Väänänen, was injured on the first series and left the game with an apparent neck injury. The rest of the game featured David Chavez at the quarterback position. Chavez showed off his athleticism, taking off and running often but was unable to put up any points. Look for the Potros to rely on their powerful running back Jose Luis and their defense led by linebacker Eduard Simon and defensive back Noah Richards to earn their second win of the season, especially if starting Väänänen can’t play.
Richards on the defense’s mentality going into this week:
“We just have to do our jobs, be aggressive, and stay together as a team. We will be ready.”

The Mariners visit Fuengirola after a tough loss to the Black Demons. Quarterback Marcos Martinez had trouble with interceptions, and the Mariner’s offense was held in check. Two bright spots on this team are national team running back Miguel Quince who has been consistent on the ground, and receiver/linebacker Alex Herrero. Watch for Herrero and Quince to make some big plays for this Mariners team if they want to earn their first win of the season.
Mariners running back Miguel Quince and the Mariners are all in this week to earn a win!
“This week is our Superbowl, its all or nothing. If we win we have chances to stay in the serie A one more year, if not we will have to beat hurricanes and see how other teams do in the last game. We are very motivated this week, it is going to be a tough game but a great game for sure.”
This matchup showcases two offenses still looking for an identity. The last time these two teams played, a short touchdown run from Väänänen and a field goal was the difference as the Potros escaped Gijon with the narrow victory. Look for this rematch in Fuengirola to be another low-scoring, competitive game.
