The Gijon Mariners (1-3) and Coslada Camioneros (2-2) will clash Sunday, February 25 in Coslada as the Spanish Liga Nacional de Fútbol Americano winds up its fifth weekend of action.
Both these teams find themselves in the middle of the standings going into their fifth game. With momentum being what these two teams are playing for, could one of their 2024 season fortunes change with a victory this weekend?
The hometown Camioneros will be entering this matchup with a 2-2 record losing to the top-of-the-table Black Demons by 29 points in Week 2 of the Spanish League and what may put bettors off of picking Coslada this week, a 48-0 shutout loss to the Osos Rivas last week.
But it isn’t all bad for the Camioneros as they have picked up wins over the last-place Alcobendas 21-18 and over their opponents this week when they visited Gijon in week 1 of the season and beat them 34-20.
Over their last five meetings, Coslada has defeated the Mariners 4 out of those 5 times, beating Gijon twice in shutout victories during the 2019 season, seeing the scorelines at 28-0 and 36-0 respectively, scoring an average of 28 points when facing the Mariners.
So when looking at the Camioneros, they need to have short memories and just go about their normal business when it comes to facing off with the Mariners.
Gijon enter this game with a 1-3 record, with their sole win coming in Week 2 of the season over a struggling Alcobendas squad in a 27-21 victory, though the Mariners fared better against Osos Rivas than the Caminoneros losing by twenty points in a 41-21 loss in week 3.
The Mariners need to find hope in the little victories such as putting 21 on a team that just shut out Coslada as their average points when matching up with the Caminoneros only hits 17.8.
With a week 3 to forget for both of these teams, they’ll both have to lock in to keep their season alive and provide hope for a late-season push for a playoff spot.
