The Gijon Mariners (2-4) will host the Coslada Camioneros (5-1) Sunday March 24 in a game with huge playoff implications for the Mariners.
The first time these two teams met earlier this year, Coslada came away with a 28-0 win.
Both teams are coming off big wins last week. The Mariners earned their second victory of the season overwhelming the winless Santiago Black Ravens 48-8 to stay in contention for a playoff spot.
The Mariners found themselves trailing 6-0 early on as Santiago’s Oliver Vázquez scored. But then it was all Gijon with running back Javier Castañón scoring three rushing touchdowns and Pablo López, adding two. Quarterback Marcos Martinez threw four touchdown passes and ran another one in himself in the win.
In Coslada, the Camioneros improved to 5-1 in beating Osos Rivas 21-14. Coslada relied on their running game to take a 13-7 halftime lead with Mexican QB Armando Morales doing most of the damage. He threw a touchdown pass to Emilio Ibáñez along with a two point conversion. Jorge Félix Velasco scored the late game-clinching touchdown for Coslada. One of the keys to the Caminoneros offense is running back Alejandro Escribano. Gijon will have to find a way to keep him in check.
