The Mallorca Voltors will play host to the newly promoted Barcelona Pagesos, Sunday, January 14 as the Spanish Liga Nacional de Fútbol Americano winds up its first weekend of play in 2024.
The Voltors finished the season with a 4-4 record in 2023 after racing out to a 4-1 record as the team suffered through a late season drought and missed the playoffs. The Pagesos, meanwhile, were the top team in Spain’s second division thus earning promotion to the elite level.
Jesus Sanchez returns to sunny Mallorca as head coach of the Voltors. The Voltors will be led by Montclair State University’s Zahir Wilder who steps in at quarterback. Some key Spanish players too watch on this year’s Voltors team include quarterback Tolo Flaquer, wideout Santiago Gonzales, and defensive back Mattias Rojas. The team also recently announced Polish offensive line import Mateusz Lorek who brings much-needed size and experience to the Mallorca trenches.
Another Barcelona team enters to the LNFA Serie A as the Pagesos move up to the country’s top domestic league after winning Serie B last season. They return a solid group of players from their championship roster, as well as adding American defensive back Joshua Green (UVA-Wise NCAA DII).
It’s hard to know what to expect from the newcomers to the league, but with Mallorca playing at home under the veteran leadership of coach Sanchez, the nod in this game would have to go to the Voltors.
