The Örebro Black Knights open the 2019 season at home in Behrn Arena Saturday, April 13 when they take on the Uppsala 86ers in the Swedish Superserien.
The Black Knights suffered through a disappointing season in 2018 struggling to a 4-4 record and getting eliminated in the semifinals by the Stockholm Mean Machines who would go on to win the title.
The two teams split the series in 2018 with Uppsala winning the first game 26-12 and the Black Knights taking the second 36-6.
Örebro’s new head coach Matt Hamme, who was was formerly the defensive coordinator for the team, has brought back quarterback Johnny Knox along with last year’s top running back Timmy Göransson both whom have recovered from injury. Knox led the Black Knights into the playoffs in 2016 before succumbing to a knee injury. Hamme has also converted linebacker Eric Murphy into a running back. The defensive line is anchored by Sebastian Nilsson and Cesar Hebel who also starts on the offensive line. Filip Jonsson is one of the top linebackers in Sweden and returns as MLB alongside his younger brother Edwin who will play the WILL spot.
Uppsala has also undergone a facelift also with a new head coach in Acke Grünewald The 86ers reached the Swedish semifinals in 2018 and came within a minute of reaching the final only to watch Carlstad pull out a thrilling win, scoring a last second touchdown.
The 86ers have opted to rely on a Swedish quarterback as young Olle Hesselgren steps behind center. His offensive line is anchored by Australian Tim Clulow while Canadian Ryan Hector has been signed as a wide receiver. On defense, Uppsala will be led by linebacker Luis Rosada along with Clulow and Hector who will both be seeing double duty. Filip Palmqvist is also a key to the 86ers front seven.
