LIVESTREAM: Sweden – Stockholm Mean Machines @Carlstad Crusaders, Sunday, June 16, 3p CEDT (9a EDT)
In the most anticipated game of the year in Sweden, the 4-1 Carlstad Crusaders will try to avenge an opening day loss to the unbeaten Stockholm Mean Machines (5-0) when they play host to the Swedish defending champions at Tingvalla field in Karlstad as Sweden’s Superserien wraps up the regular season.
The Mean Machines stunned Carlstad, and the rest of the Swedish football community, by soundly defeating the eight-time champions 33-13 in the season’s opening game.
The Crusaders have surged since losing the opening game of the season beating Orebro 46-0 and 27-13 and Uppasla 33-7 and 50-6. Part of this is due to the rushing attack led by running back Emil Knutsson. In his last two games, against Uppsala and the Black Knights he rushed for 325 yards giving him a total of 465 in five games along with four touchdowns, Quarterback Shazzon Mumphrey has looked solid and has completed 49 of 122 passes for 731 yards and 11 TDs while his leading receiver Kevin Borzsei has hauled in 21 passes for 419 yards and seven touchdowns. Backing Mumphrey up is three-time Swedish champion Phillip Juhlin who returned to the Crusaders.
In their five games this season, the Mean Machines first stunned the eight-time champion Carlstad Crusaders 33-13 in the opening game of the Swedish season and then handed the Black Knights a 23-7 loss. They then downed Uppsala twice, 20-0 and 34-7. and then downed the Black Knights again 28-7.
The Mean Machines have played and lost two international games as well as they lost a close game to Finland’s Helsinki Roosters 21-19 five weeks ago in Helsinki and then dropped a 28-25 decision to the Copenhagen Towers.
In the wins over Carlstad, Orebro and Uppsala, quarterback Alex Thury has been impressive throwing for 1,085 yards and nine touchdowns. His wide receivers make up maybe the best receiving corps in Sweden. Per Lindelöf, Hans Maximilian von Wachsmann and Alpha Jalloh are all dangerous with Jalloh always a potential game breaker. Against the Roosters he had a monster day hauling in 13 passes for 222 yards (of Stockholm’s 242 total) and two touchdowns.
Running back Josh Akena is another key to the Stockholm offense rushing for 351 yards in the five games including a 143 yard day against the Black Knights.
This promises to be the game of the season in Sweden and a possible precursor of the Swedish final.
