The Gdynia Seahawks head to Wroclaw, Poland Sunday, June 16 to face the unbeaten Wroclaw Panthers in a classic semifinal matchup to decide who advances to the Poland’s Liga Futbolu Amerykańskiego championship game.
This is a classic game between two teams that have won four of the last five Polish titles between them.
In their wild card game to qualify for a semifinal berth, the Seahawks had no trouble with the Opole Towers. rolling over them 53-0.
Wroclaw has played and beaten the Seahawks once this year, a 42-7 loss early in the season. That was the last game Gdynia played without quarterback Jason Smith (Auburn) who arrived in time for put a 72-0 pasting of the Wyszkow Rhinos. In the four games with Smith behind center, the Seahawks have averaged 57 points a game. Smith’s main targets include Jakub Mazan who can be a game changer as well as Piotr Rudnicki and Mateusz Miotke
Wroclaw experienced their own turnaround when they bought in Tony Dawson to replace quarterback Chris Forcier who suffered a season-ending injury in the CEFL loss to the Calanda Boncos. Since then, the Panthers have not lost a game in Poland or internationally. In the five domestic and two international games they have averaged 46 points a game. Key receivers for Dawson are Radim Kalous, Wiktor Zięba and Philipp Blechinger.
Playing the Panthers is tough at Olympic Stadium in Wroclaw so the home team has an edge there. But across the board, there is not much separating the two teams.
