The Nordic U19 American Football Championships kick off today in Vantaa, Finland in a three country tournament involving Finland, Sweden and Denmark. The host country Finland opens the tournament against Team Denmark.
Team Sweden will then take the field Friday, October 21 against Denmark. Then Saturday October 22, Finland and Sweden will tangle.
This tournament has been held every other year since 1999. Sweden has won the title six times including the last four. Team Finland has captured the title four times.
Finland finished second in the 2014 tournament in Bornholm, Denmark after beating Denmark while the Danes defeated the Finns four years ago to finish second after Sweden.
Team Finland features wide receiver Daniel Luoma (#81) who was ninth in Finland’s Maple League in receiving and quarterback Oscar Drockila (#7), who played for the Helsinki Wolverines in 2016.
A couple of players to watch out for on Team Denmark include wide receivers Nicholas Kaplan (#7) and Anton Engelbrecht (#87). Both receivers played for Denmark’s U19 team last year when they beat France to place third in the European Championships.
