LIVESTREAM: NEFL – Copenhagen Towers @Oslo Vikings, Saturday, April 14, 12 noon (6a EST)
The Danish defending champion Copenhagen Towers travel north to Oslo, Norway, Saturday April 14 to face the 2017 Norwegian champions, the Oslo Vikings in the opening round of the Northern European Football League (NEFL) tournament.
This is the first time the Vikings have ventured into international play since 2009. Meanwhile, Copenhagen played in the NEFL in 2017, losing to both the Carlstad Crusaders and London Warriors.
Under head coach Derek Mann, Oslo is returning 95% of their starters from the 2017 title-winning team, including 2017 Norwegian league quarterback all star Robert Mehmet Sezer . New additions to the roster include offensive tackles Dominic DeSouza (Baylor University) and Norwegian offensive tackles Jonas Hagerup, who just finished a two-year stint at San Francisco City College.
The entire receiving and running back corps has also returned.
On defense, defensive coordinator Nicolay Knutsen is happy with the return of standout linebackers Andreas Lid and Kim Schaanning along with the entire secondary.
The Vikings went undefeated in 2017 in Norway and had the highest scoring offense, recording 210 points in six games while their defense was also the best allowing only nine points a game.
For the Towers, who opened their Danish regular season with a convincing 40-0 win over the Frederikssund Oaks, the offseason has also seen the return of most of the starters including All American running back Dayton Winn. Winn collected two touchdowns in the opening day victory and, along with quarterback Patrick Hargett and wide receivers Marcus Bennett, Aske Troen and Philip Thue, will present problems for the Oslo defense.
Towers head coach Peter Herbild would definitely like to see a better performance from his team in this year’s edition of the NEFL.
