LIVESTREAM: Mexico – Saltillo Dinos @Monterrey Fundidores, Friday, February 14, 8:30p (9:30p ET, 3:30a Feb. 15 CET)
The Monterrey Fundidores (1-0) will play host to the Saltillo Dinos (1-0) Friday, February 14 at the Borregos del Tec de Monterrey stadium as the second round of Mexico’s Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA) 2020 season gets underway.
The Fundidores are coming off a 20-14 win over the Osos from Mexico City while the Dinos defeated the Artilleros 12-10 in the opening round.
Both teams play in the Northern Conference and the winner will gain a significant advantage in the standings. The two clubs have faced each other six times over the past two seasons winning three games each.
Fundidores head coach Carlos Strevel will likely rely on a platoon system at quarterback with Julio Vázquez and Marco Santana rotating. Vázquez threw a touchdown pass to receiver Aaron Williams in last week’s win. Monterrey also has three Canadian draft picks in offensive linemen Jacob Czaja (Ottawa Redblacks) and Elija Wilson (Carleton) as well as kicker Bradd Mikoluff (Manitoba).
The Dinos, under head coach Javier Adame, will likely start Roberto Vega at quarterback after he threw for 269 yards in last week’s win. Saltillo had the first overall pick in the draft of Canadian players and with it selected offensive lineman Ben Koczwara from London, Ont. The former Waterloo Warrior was previously selected in the eighth round of the 2018 CFL Draft by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Also featured on the Dinos roster is running back Bryce Vyeira who has been on the rosters of both the Redblacks and Saskatchewan Roughriders.
However, the strength of the Fundidores is their defense with a defensive front seven will put a lot of pressure on Vega, pressure he never had in the win over Osos last week.
