The Mexicas (4-3) and Mayas (5-2) face each other in the semifinals of Mexico’s Liga de Futbol Americano (LFA) Sunday, April 15 with the winner to advance to the Tazón México III.
This is the third game between these two teams this year. They split the season series. The Mexicas won the first game after rallying from a 29 point deficit to beat the Mayas 35-34. Then the Mayas gained their revenge by winning 19-12 last week.
This is the second year in a row that these two teams face each other in the semifinals. Last year, the Mayas beat the Mexicas, known as the Eagles at the time, 40-12 before going on to win their second straight title.
The Mexicas have the second highest scoring offense in the LFA with 179 points scored in seven games and the stingiest defense allowing 130 points. The Mayas are not far behind with 167 points on offense but have given up 23.7 points per game.
Mayas quarterback Marco Garcia was second in the league in passing yardage this season throwing for 1,456 yards and 14 touchdowns.Ricardo Quintana of the Mexicas finished third with 1,136 yards and nine touchdowns. However, Jose Lius Canales played in the final regular season game of the year for the Mayas.
Mexicas running back Vladimir Garcia led the league in rushing with 371 yards in seven games while Mayas running back Omar Cojolum was right behind with 370 but with a league-best eight rushing touchdowns.
These two teams know each other well so this game is a toss up.
The winner of this game will face the Raptors who defeated the Dinos in the other semifinal.
