LIVESTREAM Mexican College Championship: Autenticos Tigres UANL vs Borregos Salvajes Monterrey, Nov. 26, 02:00 CET (2 am, 8 pm ET Nov. 25)
By Roberto Arturo
Just three weeks after the Autenticos Tigres UANL topped the Borregos Salvajes Monterrey 13-6, the Clasico Regio (Monterrey Rivalry) will again take place but time the Mexican College Football Championship is on the line.
It is the first time since 2019 that a champion can be crowned. That year, the Burros Blancos from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional defeated 24-17 the Aguilas Blancas from the same Institution. COVID-19 pandemic prevented the tournament from being played in 2020, and in 2021 only exhibition games were held.
It is also the first time since 2007 that a single, undisputed Mexican College Football Champion, will be crowned. In 2008, two national Champions were crowned by the Organización Nacional de Futbol Americano (ONEFA), and from 2009 to 2019, a rival league, the CONADEIP (Comisión Nacional Deportiva Estudiantil de Instituciones Privadas) held its own Championship. With the Borregos Salvajes Monterrey headlining the latter, a final game featuring the two powerhouses from the city in northern Mexico was almost impossible. In 2016 and 2017, exhibition matches between the champions from both leagues were played; however, they featured the Autenticos Tigres against the Aztecas UDLAP and Borregos Salvajes Toluca, respectively.

The Borregos Salvajes offense features experienced quarterback Sebastián Hernández. Hernándezled the team to their last championship in 2019. He is joined in the backfield by the MVP candidate, running back Julio Covarrubias, who was the top scorer in the league with 11 touchdowns. He also finished second in the league in rushing yards, with 511, and second in the team in receiving yards, having 311.
In order to win, Autenticos Tigres will need the duo of quarterback Patricio Quiroga and wide receiver Marco “Vinny” Garcia to replicate the success that they had during the regular season. Garcia’s 640 receiving yards led the league. However, it was their defensive leader, linebacker Delfino Palomo, who scored the only touchdown of the game during the last Clasico Regio.
Borregos Salvajes Monterrey has the edge in this historic series, having won 56 games against 29 for the Autenticos Tigres.
In recent history, Monterrey has fielded some of the strongest teams in Mexico. Since last year, Autenticos Tigres and Borregos Salvajes Monterrey have had a combined 30-1 record, with the only defeat being in the game played between them earlier this month. In the professional ranks, Fundidores de Monterrey just captured their first Tazon Mexico of the Liga Profesional de Futbol Americano (LFA).
Another team, Parrilleros de Monterrey, finished first place in the now-defunct Futbol Americano de Mexico (FAM), losing the championship to the Rojos from Mexico City.
