LIVESTREAM: Japan X League Semifinal – Fujitsu Frontiers v. Elecom Kobe Finies. Sat. Nov. 30, 1p (5a CET, 11p Nov. 29 ET)
The Fujitsu Frontiers (7-0) take on the Elecom Kobe Finies (3-4) Saturday, November 30 in the first of two semifinal matchups in Japan’s X League.
The defending champion Frontiers waltzed through the regular season with relative ease compiling an unbeaten 7-0 record, averaging 46.4 points a game. However, only two teams held them to under 30 points and one of them was Elecom.
Fujutsu defeated the Kobe Finies 27-10 in their only encounter during the regular season. The only other team to keep Fujitsu under control was Obic who lost 16-14. However, Elecom finished the regular season on a three-game losing streak, and dropped their final game 41-9 to the Panasonic Impulse.
Frontiers starting quarterback Michael Birdsong has had a solid season throwing for 1,051 yards, good for fifth overall. Running back Samergy Grant led the league in rushing with 524 yards on just 54 carries. Fujitsu’s defense has allowed just 83 points scored in seven games, an average of just 11.8 points a game.
Elecom quarterback Cody Sokol was the third leading passer throwing for 1,240 yards and 11 TDs. If he can get his passing game untracked, this could actually be an interesting game. His favorite receiver, Alfonso Onunwor, has 26 receptions for 439 yards and seven touchdowns. Yuki Shirakami leads the Finies in rushing with 57 carries for 289 yards although he has missed a game. Defensive back Sean Draper and defensive lineman Cardell Rawlings lead a defense which is fourth best in Japan.
